The House Director serves as the onsite manager for Zeta Tau Alpha at Purdue University and is responsible for assisting with the development, safety and well-being of 72 residents in the house. The House Director resides in an apartment suite in the house and participates in the planning of chapter house activities, operations, and maintenance. Room and board are provided during the school year.

Responsibilities of the House Director include, but are not limited to:


  • Work to develop and maintain a safety-conscious working environment with employees and Chapter members
  • Be familiar with the Chapter Crisis Management Plan which applies to crisis situations both large and small
  • Be familiar with local fire code requirements and other emergency procedures and maintain a list of emergency contacts including the city/county police, fire, medical and university counseling services in a convenient location
  • In partnership with the House Manager, supervise emergency drills when scheduled
  • Ensure all life-safety equipment is well maintained and in good working order (fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, smoke and fire alarms, security systems and access code systems)
    • Promptly report to the appropriate volunteer any problems with life-safety equipment
  • Perform a security check of the house before retiring
    • Such check entails securing (closing and locking) all outside doors and windows on the ground and sub ground level, drawing shades and draperies and closing blinds
  • Ensure the house is safe and locked securely, fire escapes are secure, and that entrances and hallways are unobstructed always
  • Perform a daily walk through of the entire house, including both the interior and exterior of the property to review for any safety or maintenance related needs



  • Become knowledgeable about the house, furnishings, equipment and grounds
  • Supervise all repairs to and maintenance of the house and its furnishings, equipment and grounds to ensure that such repairs and maintenance are completed with Zeta Tau Alpha’s standards and guidelines
  • Supervise all deliveries
  • Promptly report any mechanical failures, required repairs and equipment needs to the appropriate volunteer
  • Maintain a log of all maintenance services to be used as verification for invoices (ex. dates of lawn care, pest service, snow removal, )
  • Supervision of housekeeping staff and contractors


  • Ensure standards of housekeeping are followed and encourage careful upkeep of the house and property, with an emphasis on the public areas of the house and grounds
  • Participate in minor repairs, maintenance and upkeep of the house as would normally be expected of any tenant, including running errands as may be needed
  • Manage the purchase and storage of supplies necessary for the normal maintenance of the house according to the guidelines established and within the allotted budget
  • Perform and maintain an annual inventory of all house furnishings, cooking utensils and equipment, miscellaneous kitchen items, flatware, glassware, china, silver and other items that are not personal property of Chapter members, and provide this inventory to the appropriate volunteer
    • Provide prompt notification to the appropriate volunteer when items are found missing or in need of repair



  • In partnership with the House Manager and Cook (or kitchen management representative) supervise the planning of meals that are varied, appetizing, of good quality and nutritional value while maintain costs within an allotted budget
    • Ensure the use of fresh vegetables and fruits when possible, and post menus on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as appropriate
  • Assist with breakfast as needed, oversee the lunch buffet and dinner
  • In partnership with the House Manager and Cook (or kitchen management representative), supervise the planning of food for special occasions
    • Supervise the food/dining room preparation, serving and cleanup
    • Assist the collegiate chapter with communicating the food items that need purchasing for these occasions
  • Supervise the meal service and cleanup
  • Communicate with Cook or kitchen management team to maintain the kitchen inventory of silverware, dishes, glassware, and serving utensils, plates, bowls,



  • Understand and implement budget management related to the house
  • Monitor and track spending throughout the year



  • Coordinate and supervise preparation for the house for opening at the beginning of the academic year and after relevant academic year breaks
  • Check all rooms before Chapter members take possession
  • Be present at the house on each opening day to greet Chapter members and parents and provide assistance as needed
  • Coordinate and supervise the preparation of the house for closing prior to all academic year breaks during which the house is scheduled to close, and at the end of the academic year
  • With the House Manager, recheck each room during the closing of the house at the end of the academic year to record any damages
  • Be present at the house on closing days to provide assistance as may be required
    • The House Director is to be the last person to leave the house and lock up
  • Maintain a set of keys and or access codes to all doors



  • Be responsible for creating a pleasant home-like atmosphere, maintaining standards of good taste and cooperating in every way to promote the welfare of Chapter members


  • The House Director shall not act as a disciplinarian nor is to be involved with the internal business of the Chapter
    • As an employee of the Chapter, problems that arise regarding the facility, Chapter or its individual members, are to be discussed with the appropriate volunteer
  • Maintain in strict confidence the workings of the Chapter (social and financial affairs and those of the members)
  • Eat at least one meal a day with the residents, encouraging a friendly and engaging atmosphere



  • Assist the House Manager or other appropriate Chapter officer, as requested, in the planning of social functions to held at the Chapter house
  • Attend social functions at the Chapter house as requested by the Chapter
  • Be present during formal recruitment week and other recruitment functions
  • Meet and welcome guest to the house, including parents, alumnae and volunteers



  • Be knowledgeable of Chapter House Rules as well as Zeta Tau Alpha National Polices and University polices on alcohol, drugs, visitation and social conduct
    • Observe and comply with the same
  • Illegal and illicit drugs are not allowed on the property at any time
  • Violations of these rules shall be documented and immediately reported to the appropriate volunteer
  • Work in partnership with the Chapter leadership when performing room searches and seizures of prohibited items
    • The House Director is not to initiate and/or perform room searches without Chapter leadership or volunteer oversight



  • The House Director shall establish regular and standard hours of availability to Chapter members
  • When the House Director leaves the Chapter house for an extended period of time, she will for an extended period of time, she shall provide the telephone number and location of her whereabouts, so she can be reached in the event of an emergency situation
  • The House Director does not have the authority to enter into any contracts for goods or services on behalf of the Chapter or Fraternity Housing Corporation



  • The House Director may have guests visit the Chapter house
    • These guests are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of our facility while on site
  • There are to be no overnight guests of the House Director unless permission is granted by the appropriate volunteer

The House Director must be professional and have good organizational and communication skills. She must exercise good judgement and adhere to all rules and regulations as they apply to the Zeta Tau Alpha house. Applicant must possess:

  • Positive, solution-focused attitude
  • Ability to interact professionally and diplomatically with members, parents, alumnae, service providers, campus representatives, and community resources
  • Proficient with basic budgeting
  • Understanding of basic technology functions including Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to scan documents
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work with collegiate women, patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor


  • Ability and willingness to maintain confidential information
  • Availability to reside at the Chapter house and be on call for urgent situations
  • Capability to perform typical activities such as climbing up to three flights of stairs, lifting, and bending
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

The House Director will receive a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include: a private, furnished live-in apartment with office/living space, bedroom, and private bath, meals when collegians are in the house, cable TV, landline phone, Internet connection, a designated parking space, and all University holidays. Minimal Essential Care (MEC Plan) Health Insurance is available through Reliance. The House Director is eligible for paid vacation and sick days. During the summer break, the chapter house closes, and the House Director will have limited responsibilities and extensive free time for personal activities. The House Director is employed for a 10-month contractual period and is required to reside onsite during all nights when chapter members are in residence.

Required experience:

  • Previous experience working with college-age students: 1 year
  • Previous House Director, University Residence Life or facility management experience is beneficial: 1 year
